This is a very short sentence in Baseline, metaphorically speaking.  Not literally so, but if you read a lot of dath ilani fiction, it's very obviously where the plot of the story is heading.

Could it be subverted?  Yes, obviously, but you can't rely on that; quite often, dath ilani stories don't subvert a very obvious trope, because the actual plot twist is somewhere else.
