It explains his planet's hidden history very neatly, if the planet doesn't have any. It explains why Keltham would have a latent desire for sadism despite being from a planet where people have apparently never heard of sadism or masochism. And it's less, uh, wild than supposing that we're living in a specifically dath ilani romance novel."
